Thomas Hornbuckle

Thomas Hornbuckle, a founding member of The Hornbuckle Firm, has been an active attorney for over 40 years and is licensed to practice in Washington and Texas. Mr. Hornbuckle has tried cases in Washington, Texas, and Tennessee. He is rated by attorneys and judges AV through Martindale-Hubble, the highest rating for legal ability and ethics.

Mr. Hornbuckle has represented some of the largest corporations in the country trying to juries virtually every variety of civil litigation. He has handled cases involving asbestos exposure, anti- trust, tortious interference with a contract, legal and medical malpractice as well as other matters of courtroom work. He has represented prominent individuals and small businesses including the famed heart surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey, as well as representing Baylor College of Medicine. This gives him a unique grasp of jury litigation from a perspective that other trial lawyers may not have experienced.

In 1990, Mr. Hornbuckle obtained the first and largest significant verdict against a nursing home of $39 million. The case was thereafter settled in mediation for $4 million with a net to the client of $2,360,000 after attorney’s fees and expenses of $1,640,000. The case involved the misuse of a restraint leading to wrongful death. The jury verdict made headlines in the Wall Street Journal and in newspapers across the country. It marked a turning point in the battle against the nursing home industry by families in wrongful death cases. The firm continued to obtain very significant jury verdicts for families in their effort to obtain quality care for their loved ones.

Tom received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Houston Law Center in 1965 where he was elected Editor in Chief of the law review. He is a member of the Order of the Barons, the honorary legal scholastic society of the University of Houston Law Center.
