A moderate brain injury can result in expenses closer to $941,000, and treating severe brain injury can run into the millions. In fact, the estimated cost of simply caring for a victim of brain injury ranges from $600,000 to $1,875,000 over the course of a lifetime. Most victims are lucky if insurance offers to cover one-third of those expenses.

Treating traumatic brain injury often necessitates emergency surgical intervention and long-term inpatient care. Following release from the hospital, a team of medical specialists will be required to begin what is likely to be a long and arduous rehabilitation process. In most cases these specialists will be paid separately, increasing monthly expenses and placing additional strain on victims and their families. Tragically, even with the assistance of specialists, full recovery is never guaranteed.
