April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Since we live in a time where thousands of people are seriously injured and killed in car accidents related to distracted driving every year, April has been designated Distracted Driving Awareness Month. While it is truly unfortunate this designation takes place, raising awareness is a good step to lowering the accident rate.

The main culprit in distracted driving is using a cell phone, especially texting. According to the National Safety Council, up to 26% of car accidents today involve the use of cell phones, including hands-free devices.

However, anything that draws the driver’s attention away from the road can cause an accident. Cars can travel quite a distance in the blink of an eye. If a driver is texting, changing the radio, grabbing for food, or paying more attention to the kids or dog in the backseat, the chances of becoming involved in a serious car accident increase dramatically.

The best way to reduce accidents caused by distracted driving is to put the cell phone away when you drive, and don’t text, and keep distractions inside the car to a minimum. While this is easier said than done for some people, your life and those around you may depend on it.
