A KOMO news helicopter crashed this morning, March 18, next to Fisher Plaza. The pilot and photographer aboard the helicopter were killed and a man whose car was hit by the helicopter is listed in critical condition with burn injuries over 50% of his body.

According to witnesses, the helicopter was just lifting off a landing pad outside the station’s offices when the engine suddenly sounded strange and the helicopter turned onto its side. It then allegedly hit some trees, dove into the ground and exploded. The injured man on the ground was able to pull himself from his car and collapsed near the vehicle.

Two other vehicles caught fire after the helicopter crash.

Investigators from the FAA and the NTSB have just started looking into the crash. However, no cause may be found, or at least announced, for months.

The rarity of accidents like this does not make them any less tragic for those directly involved. As the investigation into what caused the crash continues, it is important to remember that the families of the victims, as well as the injured, will need continued support.
